Telefonica Deutschland has decided to stop marketing its IPTV service Alice TV, according to local reports. The operator was not successful in selling the service to its DSL customers and just 83,000 out of 2,588,000 subscribe to Alice TV.
Telefonica bought the IPTV service when it acquired Hamburg-base Hansenet from Telecom Italia in 2010 and integrated it with its O2 broadband product. The IPTV offer consisted of a basic tier retailing at €7.99 and an extended bouquet at €11.99.
Alice TV is available in 150 German cities and their surrounding communities. Technical reach is about 10 million homes. Contrary to the reports, according to the company’s website it is still possible to subscribe to Alice.
Of the other two IPTV providers in the country, Vodafone TV reported just 34,000 subscribers to its hybrid TV service, which combines analogue, cable, digital satellite and IPTV. Deutsche Telekom’s Entertain service reported 1.375 million subscribers and is by far the most successful IPTV platform in the country.
