Canal+ Cyfrowy, the operator of the Polish DTH platform Cyfra+, has been fined PLN1,806,304 (€430,938) by the competition authority UOKiK for misleading its customers.
In a statement, the UOKiK says that it initiated proceedings in July 2011 after being made aware of letters sent by the company to subscribers wishing to terminate their contacts.
In them, Canal+ Cyfrowy said they would be required to call the company in order to do this, whereas in fact, according to the UOKiK, it would have been sufficient to do so in writing.
In the UOKiK’s view, calls would have placed Canal+ Cyfrowy in an advantageous position, as it would have been able to offer a better package over the telephone.
Cyfra+ is currently the second largest DTH platform in Poland after Cyfrowy Polsat, claiming around 1.5 million subscribers.
That figure will rise to around 2.5 million when it eventually merges with platform n, following a deal struck by the Vivendi-backed company and ITI Group last year.
