Voice and gesture control for Samsung Smart TVs

January 10, 2012 10.33 Europe/London By Robert Briel

WATCH VIDEO. Samsung has unveilded its new generation of Smart TVs at this year’s CES in Las Vegas introducing voice and gesture control.

Using a built-in camera in front of the TV set, the set immediately recognises who is in front of the set and personalises the settings, including the viewer’s favourite apps.

Called Smart Interaction, the feature is like Microsoft’s Kinnect, but without the games. At the same time, Samsung has also improved its smart hub integrating all functionalities in a single screen.

Under the name Smart Content, viewers can directly access all of their content, which can sit on any device or stored in the cloud. Samsung’s AllShare Play enables consumers to easily access personal content regardless of where you are in the world or whether it is stored on a TV, tablet, camera, phone or PC.

Finally, Samsung promises your new Smart TV “will never be out of date” with Smart Evolution. Using a chipset on a stick, viewers can stick this in the back of their future-proof TV to update all the smart funcionalities.

This is all part of Samsung’s new connected ecosystem that encompasses its diverse array of products, content and services.

“We stand alone as the only company capable of connecting all the components of a consumer’s electronic life,” said BK Yoon, president of Samsung’s Consumer Electronics Division (see picture). “From TVs to phones, tablets to PCs, cameras to appliances, we are enabling meaningful connections between them all. Our promise is that you will share and enjoy content across all these devices, easily, anywhere, anytime.”

Samsung claims more than 1,400 Smart TV apps now available including Angry Birds, Discovery Channel, and the number of third-party developers that has grown from 550 to 25,000 in just two years.

The company has also launched three Smart TV services: Family Story, Fitness and Kids. Family Story enables families to share photos and messages with each other, Family Fitness easily sync their fitness goals and activities, and Kids help kids partake in educational viewing while recording progress every step of the way.
