UltraViolet, which offers purchasers of packaged media a lifetime licence to view their product electronically, is launching in the UK on December 26th when Final Destination will be released with the format.
Although announced for a mid-2011 launch UltraViolet was not expected to make its UK debut until next year.
The UltraViolet alliance is backed by Warner Home Entertainment, Sony Pictures and Universal Pictures, but a number of European companies also hold membership. These include BSkyB, BT, FilmFlex, Lovefilm, Red Bee Media and Tesco as members, in addition to Alcatel Lucent, Cisco, Comcast, Fox, Irdeto, Liberty Global, Nagravision NBC Universal, NDS, Paramount, Rovi, Techicolor and Toshiba, amongst others.
Earlier this month Tesco, which is a member of UltraViolet launched its own product that associates customers to electronic media through its loyalty card scheme.
