Portugal Telecom has said that its IPTV service Meo surpassed one million customers in just three and half years after it was launched in April 2008. The operator also launched its Meo Go service.
Meo customers represented circa 93% of PT’s fixed broadband customers and 38% of its fixed lines at the end of 3Q11. Net additions since the beginning of October 2011 surpassed 25,000 customers. Although Meo is primarily an IPTV service, there is also a satellite DTH version available for people outside the footprint.
The Meo IPTV service offers 150 linear TV channels, a PVR, catch-up TV, video on demand and games and music on demand. Red button applications are available with a number of programmes such as American Idol, Secret Story and Biggest Loser.
Other services are available via widgets including My Newscast (in conjunction with state broadcaster RTP; see screen shot), BenficaTV, Sport TV, Meo Surf, and various music and radio apps, and a karaoke application.
Portugal Telecom has launched the Meo Go service, which offers 60 TV channels and video on demand (Medo Videoclube) on the computer, mobile phones and tablets. Thee service will be free of charge until March 31, 2012 and after that date it will cost €8 monthly.
Portugal Telecom has said that clients of its mobile service TMN will not pay for traffic generated within the service.
The Meo Go service will also be available via smart phones for €4. As part of a special promotion lasting until December 15, Portugal Telecom is giving away 20 free movies on the service to its clients.
