More than 411,000 UPC Nederland customers used VOD during the first six months of 2011, watching a total of 32 million programmes.
The figures of VOD usage represent an increase of 20% as compared with the first half of 2010, when customers requested 27 million programmes.
UPC plans to expand its VOD library considerably during the coming six months. Negotiations are under with the two main private broadcasters, RTL and SBS, to offer paid previews of programmes on demand before the actual broadcast.
In cooperation with SBS, UPC will start to offer episodes of TV series such as Desperate Housewives, NCIS and Two and a Half Men. With regards to the movie library, UPC expects to increase the number of available titles in VOD from 400 to 2,000.
Pim Hofmeester, director of VOD at UPC, said in a statement: “Since the start of UPC on Demand in 2007, we worked hard on our movie offer. Thanks to our good agreements with distributors, we are able to offer films at the same time as their release on DVD or Blue Ray. We are now expanding the range of high quality art house films. There is growing demand for this genre films. At the same time we we will include more blockbuster movies and as well as movies from film festivals that are sponsored by UPC.”
