Disney Channel goes free-to-air in Turkey

October 24, 2011 11.09 Europe/London By Julian Clover

Disney Turkey has announced plans to launch a new advertising supported channel that will broadcast free-to-air to more than 11 million households.

The satellite-delivered channel will be available to more than 60% of Turkish TV households when it goes live on January 12, 2012. It will also be offered to cable and IPTV platforms.

The launch will see distribution for Disney Channel top 100 million homes across Europe, the Middle East and Africa in 2012, having trebled over the past 3 years.

Key shows such as Shake It Up and Wizards of Waverly Place, original movies such as the High School Musical series and Lemonade Mouth and popular animations including Phineas and Ferb will feature on the new channel

“Each and every market we operate in is unique, demanding a tailored solution to maximise the potential for Disney’s family entertainment. Turkey’s youthful population coupled with a high affinity for digital media create a perfect environment for this free to air approach,” said Giorgio Stock, executive vice president & managing director, Disney Channels, music, publishing, gaming and online, The Walt Disney Company EMEA.

In 2008 Disney deployed a similar strategy in Spain, when it also launched a free-to-air channel.
