Tablets taking iPlayer viewing requests

October 17, 2011 10.28 Europe/London By Julian Clover

The BBC iPlayer has seen a significant increase in the number of requests coming from tablet devices. Of the 153 million requests for TV and radio programmes made during September 4.6 million were from tablets, compared to 4 million in August.

In recent months there has been a plateauing of the total number of requests that reached a high in January 2011 with 162 million requests. However, there has been a shift in the mix now that Virgin Media TiVo homes are included in the 90 million online requests, with a further 23 million requests through the old Liberate/TV Navigator middleware.

TiVo is included in ‘Other devices’, which also accounts for Freesat, Freeview, BT Vision and Blu-Ray. The Other Devices figure is at 6%.

Requests from games consoles at 5% remain relatively stable, though computers at 65% are in a slow decline, ostensibly because of the increase in TV devices that can receive the iPlayer.

Live TV viewing via BBC iPlayer made up 13% of all TV requests (down-2pts month-on- month), while live radio listening remained stable at 77%.
