Ghana has become the latest African country to choose DVB-T2 for its terrestrial broadcasting standard. The government has accepted recommendations from the Digital Broadcasting Migration Committee (DBMC), citing the flexibility of the system that will allow it to transmit HD, SD and mobile signals within the same transmission network,
Nationally available channels GTV, TV3, TV Africa, Crystal TV, Metro TV, Viasat1, Net-2 TV, e-TV Ghana, Coastal TV, GhOne and Top TV will now commence the process of migrating to the digital standard.
In addition to DVB-T2, Ghana will also use AVC/MHEG-4 compression and, significantly, the MHEG-5 Application Programming Interface popularised in the UK.
Nationwide rollout of DVB-T2 will commence in 2012 and the government has requested that the import of DVB-T receivers should cease.
