The UK’s transition to digital broadcasting is gathering momentum, with the cumulative population switched to all digital TV now standing at 63%.
This follows the completion of transmitter groups in Emley Moor (Yorkshire) and Sutton Coldfield (West Midlands), raising the switched total from what was previously below 50%.
Arqiva is investing £700 million (€801.1 million) and 1,200 man-years of work to implement the transition over a five-year period, working in conjunction with Digital UK.
Yorkshire has become the ninth region to complete the transition, with the number of switched transmission sites reaching 873, equivalent to 48 of the 68 transmitter groups.
Central will complete on September 28 with the Oxford transmitter group. By year’s end, 11 of the UK’s 15 regions will have switched, representing 80% of transmitters and 65% of the population.
The London region, which represents 18% of the UK population and has just one transmitter group, will switch in April 2012.
