IBC 2011 – AMSTERDAM. Virgin Media is to begin shipment of TiVo boxes manufactured by Samsung Electronics before the end of the year.
Samsung will join the existing supplier Cisco, which has delivered 50,000 units since the product was launched.
“This is a major win for Samsung Electronics and one that will strengthen Samsung’s position as a technology supplier,” said Warren Hampton, general manager of Samsung’s set-top box division.
Joshua Danovitz, general manager, TiVo International, told Broadband TV News that TiVo had previously worked with Samsung on the DirecTV platform in the United States. “This is done on a Samsung designed box with a TiVo porting kit,” he confirmed.
TiVo has created a hardware porting programme that also includes Cisco and Samsung.
Previously Samsung has supplied Virgin with its V+ personal video recorder and a zapper box.
