NBC Universal’s Universal Studios is suing the Romanian public broadcaster TVR for $11 million (€7.64 million).
Media Expres and Adevarul report that a lawsuit was filed by Universal Studios last week in the Supreme Court in Los Angeles following TVR’s failure to comply with a six-year contract that gave it the right to broadcast a number of leading movies and TV series in Romania and neighbouring Moldova.
According to Universal, TVR missed financial deadlines, paying only a small amount of money earlier this year after protests from Universal.
Alexandru Sassu, a former head of TVR, warned back in May 2010 that the broadcaster faced problems with the Universal contract due its inability to appoint a board of directors.
This situation was brought about by the Romanian parliament’s refusal to accept TVR’s report on its activities in 2008.
