Vodafone Netherlands launches TV service

August 15, 2011 07.59 Europe/London By Julian Clover

The Dutch branch of Vodafone has announced the launch of a triple play service over fibre networks in The Netherlands. Using the glass fibre infrastructure of Reggefiber, the telecoms company has started to offer its Thuis Internet, Bellen & TV bundle.

Initially, the new service, which includes Vodafone TV, is available in the municipalities of Barneveld, Beuningen, Emmer-Compascum, Groesbeek, Groot Salland, Leudal, Millingen aan de Rijn, Nuth and Zevenaar.

The triple play bundles includes broadband internet access with speeds of 30, 50 and 100 Mbps, which monthly subscription fees for the bundles priced at €49.95, €59.95 and €74.95 respectively.

The subscription includes a basic TV bouquet consisting of 60 channels and 20 HD channels. Additional tiers are available.

Bart Hofker, director consumer market at Vodafone Netherlands, said in a statement: “With the availability of Vodafone Home Internet, Phone & TV, Vodafone puts another step in the transformation of traditional mobile operator into a provider of all communication. With our consumer services now available over fibre, households can take advantage of higher internet speeds and better quality than they already experience with Vodafone for mobile telephony.”

“We are delighted that Vodafone services are now delivered over our fibre network,” said Bert Nijboer, CEO of Reggefiber, also in a statement. “Vodafone is a large and experienced telecommunications company. Based on their expertise in delivering mobile services, Vodafone will certainly offer attractive internet, telephony and television services on our fibre network. ”

Vodafone is already active with TV business in a number of markets, including Iceland, Germany and Spain. IPTV forms the backbone of these TV services, but in Spain the operator has developed a hybrid service combining DTT and IPTV, while in Germany there is a hybrid offer consisting of satellite DTH and IPTV. In Iceland, there is just an IPTV service. In November of last year, Vodafone’s French subsidiary SFR launched an advanced hybrid TV service.
