Spain’s regional telecommunications providers, including Ono, Euskaltel and Telecable have secured new mobile capacity as part of a nationwide spectrum auction that raised around of €1,647 million for the country’s exchequer.
Ono paid €13.3 million to enable it to provide its own mobile network in Madrid, Catalonia, Valencia, Cantabria, Murcia and La Rioja, with 20 MHz in each region.
Jazztel invested €6 to secure capacity in Andalusia, Aragon, the Balearic Islands and Castilla y Leon.
Euskaltel (Basque Country, R Galicia and Asturias) and Telecable Telecom (Castilla La Mancha) were also successful in their home regions.
The majority of the spectrum however went to the three national operators Telefónica, Vodafone and Orange that secured nationwide capacity for €1,622 million.
The figure was disappointing for the Spanish government that had hoped to net over €2,000 from the sell-off.
