Viasat gains premium subs

July 20, 2011 14.18 Europe/London By Chris Dziadul

Viasat secured 23,000 new premium subscribers in the Nordic region in the year to June 2011.

However, the total number at the end of June was, at 1,048,000, unchanged on three months earlier.

The majority of these (645,000, down from 653,000 three months earlier) were satellite subscribers, with the remainder (403,000, down from 394,000) from third party networks.

All value added services continued to gain subscribers, ViasatPlus ending the second quarter with 172,000 (163,000 in Q1), Multiroom with 239,000 (237,000) and HD with 255,000 (232,000).

Net sales with Q2 amounted to SEK1,186 million (€128.5 million), or 6% more than a year earlier, and operating income stood at SEK228 million (+3%).

Viasat’s pay-TV emerging markets division, which now encompasses 28 countries across the CEE region, Africa and the US, meanwhile ended Q2 with 438,000 premium subscribers, or 89,000 more than a year earlier but unchanged on the previous quarter.

This reflected strong growth in Ukraine and Russia and a stable position in the Baltic Republics.

The number of mini pay-TV subscriptions meanwhile stood at 61,105,000, up from 58,197,000 and 45,467,000 three and 12 months earlier respectively.

Net sales in Q2 stood at SEK230 million (+2% on 12 months earlier) and the operating income was SEK22 million (-41%).

MTG’s net sales in Q2 were SEK3,531 million (+3% y-o-y) and its total EBIT was SEK681 million (-3%).

Total net income stood at SEK479 million (-11%).
