DIGITAL TV CEE – BUDAPEST. The web TV service launched by the Romanian incumbent telco Romtelecom is proving to be a success.
According to Peter Telpak, product marketing & TV business director, residential segment, Romtelecom, it had 770,000 unique visitors in less than three months.
He added that the service offers a linear channel raster of 30 TV channels, several proprietary, along with over 200 VOD titles, some of which are paid for and others ad funded.
Telpak also said the challenge for Romtelecom was how to make this more than just as browser-based solution.
Commenting on the Romanian market in general, he said that that it has 80% pay-TV penetration and some of the lowest broadband and cable ARPU anywhere.
However, it also has the fourth average broadband speeds in the world after Japan, South Korea and Hong Kong.
Telpak also said he viewed OTT as an opportunity rather than risk for the cable business.
