The BBC iPlayer has returned to Boxee having been absent from the platform since March. It had previously been dropped by the open source over-the-top platform in a dispute over its usage. Marketing director Andrew Kippen told Broadband TV News that Boxee was keen to ensure that any app that appeared on the platform complied with copyright and offered suitable video quality. “The iPlayer is back and we now have a great partnership with the BBC,” said Kippen.
Alongside the new iPlayer will be access to Blinkbox, the video platform recently acquired by Tesco that will be available by the end of the year, as will a new iPad app.
The innovations were unveiled at an event in London designed to foster relations with Boxee’s user base and which was attended by around 400 fans and members of the developer community. “We’ve been focussed on the US, but are now starting to see support from the UK, Sweden and Germany,” said Kippen.
Boxee, which has been available in the UK for around six months, is working on a single payment system that will be provided by Vindicia, a company more familiar to the gaming community.
This will give Boxee an ongoing revenue stream and allow it to offer paid for content.
