Star TV channels go HbbTV in Germany

May 4, 2011 09.25 Europe/London By Robert Briel

ANGA CABLE 2011 – COLOGNE. Star TV’s four TV channels from India will become available in Germany for the first time using HbbTV following a deal with Mediapool.

The Star TV channels are the first to make use of the HbbTV solution, demonstrated at the ANGA show by Teveo interactive. The new hybrid TV standard allows Mediapool to provide specialised premium content in a cost-efficient way. It also allows viewers, who today are unable to access value-added services such as VOD and EPGs via conventional distribution platforms, to access such services.

In Germany, Mediapool today distributes more than 50 international TV channels via cable TV networks and IPTV. The four Star TV channels are Star Plus, Star Gold, Star News and Star One.

In a related development, the German sports channel Sport1 has also announced an agreement to make use of the Teveo HbbTV platform for distribution of its signal to places where the channel is not carried by the local or regional operator.
