Chinese pay-TV technology provider SMiT has partnered with Taiwan-based NextMedia in a new over-the-top TV platform. The NextTV project involves several million users in Taiwan and offers online access to live broadcast, catch-up and VOD content delivered through a SMiT developed set-top box.
SMiT worked on the project with Orbit Media, a company that originated out of the Multimedia Laboratory of Tsinghua University, and has acquired a number of patents from the educational establishment covering OTT video transmission.
SMiT and Orbit are already working on a second-generation product, designed to further improve the functionality.
Security is taken care of through work with DRM vendors that include Verimatrix. OpenGL, QT and Flash technologies have also been incorporated and SMiT is currently working on a new User Interface.
