Telefónica O2 ended 2010 with 2.8 million subscribers to its TV services, principally in Spain, Latin America and Central & East Europe. The 8.9% increase continues to compensate for the reduction in fixed line telephony, down 2.7% year-on-year, though the rate of decrease slowed in the fourth quarter when compared to previous periods.
In Spain, where Telefónica is required to pay €107 million as part of the so-called TV tax, an additional 85,000 IPTV connections were added in the year and 15,000 on the quarter. This took the total number of TV subscribers to 788,000.
In the Czech Republic, pay-TV customers had reached 129,000 by the end of the year.
