Mediaset adds OTT to Premium DTT

February 22, 2011 16.22 Europe/London By Julian Clover

Mediaset has unveiled Premium Net TV, the Italian broadcaster’s first foray into over-the-top television delivery, claiming the line-up is unmatched by any other operator in the country. The video solution, masterminded by Accenture’s Innovation Center for Broadband in Rome, runs across TV, PC and other connected devices such as games consoles.

In addition to catch-up TV from the last seven days on the Mediaset channels, the service will also include movies, TV series, cartoons, documentaries and football, much of it in HD.

“After the success of Premium On Demand, we have decided to offer television viewers a service that in terms of the technological content, ease of use, quality and new content is an unprecedented innovation,” said Pier Silvio Berlusconi, deputy chairman Mediaset.

The offer will be available as part of Mediaset’s successful DTT platform – viewable to any household that has the so-called “Gold Standard” decoder. Movie titles will also be available to rent with deals struck with Hollywood majors that include Warner, Universal, Medusa and 01 Distribution.

Mediaset’s adoption of the Accenture Video Solution will assist in the delivery of both linear content through the broadcast network and advanced interactive services through an open broadband IP network on industry standard set-top boxes. The Accenture Video Solution supports several advanced applications such as targeted advertising, personalized content recommendation and adaptive streaming, depending on available bandwidth.

“The service we built for Mediaset enriches the traditional TV consumption experience and will bring a new level of engagement – typical of the online world – flexibility and greater consumer choice,” said Francesco Venturini, global broadcast lead of Accenture’s Media & Entertainment industry group. “In addition, this solution will enable new ways for Mediaset to enhance customer relationships, strengthen customer loyalty – especially with younger generations – and will boost advertising-generated revenues and content usage, all critical objectives for broadcasters as the role of the television continues to evolve from home television to personal television.”

Accenture’s Italian operation works on media solutions for deployment across the globe.
