CABLE CONGRESS 2011 – LUCERNE. Liberty Global CEO Mike Fries says there is no need for Chellomedia to emulate the kind of deal struck by Comcast in the United States.
Speaking in the industry leaders panel View from the Top, Fries said that it had not been easy taking the Chellomedia operation to where it was, but that the division was approaching the top ten of content providers.
“The jury is out on the move with Comcast and NBC Universal,” he said. “For us we have a ton to get done on our core business. We believe content will come to us. I don’t think we’ll be buying a studio or creating content, we’ll be leaving that to somebody else.”
The comments from Fries chimed with fellow panelist, former MTV International CEO Bill Roedy, who said he did not think that cable operators made for good content providers.
Chellomedia operates close to 50 channels in Europe, its business augmented by the purchase of ONO’s channel business.
