German cable operator Kabel Deutschland (KDG) has started to offer their DOCSIS 3.0 100 Mbps broadband product, including unlimited phone calls for a promotional price of €19.90 during the first 12 months.
After the promotional period, the price steps up to the retail level of €39.90 per month.
At the same time, Kabel Deutschland has stopped marketing its 60 Mbps flat internet & phone bundle.
Kabel Deutschland launched DOCSIS 3.0 in the city of Hamburg in February 2010. At present, the operator offers its super-fast internet services in approximately 40% of its upgraded footprint. By mid 2012, DOCSIS 3.0 products will be available in Kabel Deutschland’s entire upgraded network.
Interestingly, Liberty Global’s Manuel Kohnstam said that UPC’s 25 Mbps DOCSIS 3.0 product is the company’s ‘sweet spot’, outselling other speeds. It is our take that very high speeds such as 100 Mbps, 120 Mbps or even 200 Mbps might be good for postioning cable as a full grown alternative to FTTH networks. However, very few households will actually need such high speeds for their day-to-day internet usage.
