Consolidation in Romania’s cable industry is gathering momentum, with RCS/RDS and Romtelecom competing strongly to snap up a number of small operators.
ZF reports that a cable company named Teleson, which is based in the town of Sighisoara, has been bought by RCS/RDS from the politician Petru Basa.
Interestingly, it adds that RCS/RDS is apparently coming in with counteroffers for operators as soon as Romtelecom lodges a bid.
RCS/RDS is currently the largest cable operator in Romania, with UPC Romania in second place and AKTA (Digital Cable Systems) third.
Romtelecom, through its wholly owned subsidiary NextGen, is gradually building up its subscriber base but still some way behind the market leaders.
Although there were some 500 cable operators in Romania as of mid-2010, RCS/RDS and UPC together accounted for almost 80% of subscribers.
