Ukraine’s National Council on Television and Radio Broadcasting has kick-started the transition to digital broadcasting by awarding a 10-year licence for four national MPEG-4 multiplexes.
According to AKTR and Prime TASS, the recipient of the licence is a company named Zeonbud, which beat off competition from a rival bidder named TRK Mobile Kanal.
The total cost of the licence for the four multiplexes is $8 million (€6.04 million) and Zeonbud will be required to invest at least $100 million in building up a DTT network.
The four multiplexes (MX-1, MX-2, MX-3 and MX-5) will carry at least 32 FTA channels.
Earlier, the Council took the surprise decision to cancel all previous DTT licence awards.
