Portugal Telecom’s MEO IPTV service continues to perform in one of the most competitive markets in Southern Europe. Its revamp of its user interface being promoted by a commercial in 3D, itself timed to coincide with the operator’s 3D coverage of the world surfing circuit.
The result has been an IPTV service, which as telcos around Europe are increasingly finding, is starting to put an end to the erosion of fixed line telephony services.
Net additions for the first nine months of the year were 188,000, bringing the total number of pay-TV customers to 769,000, a figure equivalent to 79.8% of the fixed broadband customer base. 67,000 net additions came in during the third quarter. Pay-TV customer penetration stands at 29.7% of traffic generating lines.
EBITDA within the Wireline business came to €560 million in the nine-month period.
More than 50% of MEO’s IPTV customers have purchased content over VOD, and now consume an average of 2.3 movies per month. In the third quarter, the most watched movies were Couples Retreat, followed by The Princess and the Frog and Sherlock Holmes.
