Sony has launched a dedicated website for developers of apps for its Google Android TV sets. At the moment, the site only offers the opportunity to register as a developer.
After announcing the availability of the first Google TV sets and Blu-ray player, Sony is now eager to have as many apps as possible for the new devices. The new models come with a limited number of apps pre-installed, but Sony hopes to jump start interest by encouraging the development of more apps.
With the relative openness of Google Android TV, the manufacturer also hopes to beat rivals such as Apple TV, who prefer to offer a walled garden environment. In the past, Apple has been very keen to prevent third party apps from the likes of Boxee to develop apps for their set-top.
