M6 starts live streaming on iPhone, iPad

October 4, 2010 08.59 Europe/London By Robert Briel

Although coming pretty late to the party, French commercial broadcaster M6 has now launched its catch-up TV service M6 Replay on the iPhone, iPod Touch and soon also on the iPad. In addition, the channel is also available as a live stream, both on Wi-Fi and via 3G.

French broadcasters including TF1, Canal+ , W9, BFM and France 24, have been quick to provide special apps offering catch-up TV for the iPhone. M6 is now one of the first to offer live streaming of the channel as well as a dedicated iPad version for better video quality.

The app also offers ‘bonus’ selections, programmes and videos that have not been broadcast by the channel, but exclusively available to mobile viewers. Programmes in the M6 Replay section remain available for two weeks after the original broadcast.

The M6 app can be downloaded free of charge via the French iTunes store and is available for usage in France only. Access to the programming is also free, the broadcaster hoping to recoup its costs by selling advertising and banners with the videos.
