Polish DTT a costly business

September 14, 2010 11.18 Europe/London By Chris Dziadul

The cost of launching and then operating a channel for the first year on Poland’s commercial DTT multiplex could exceed PLN20 million (€5.1 million).

However, according to Rzeczpospolita, such a high amount would only be paid by new rather than existing services.

The second multiplex, which is expected to make its debut at the end of this month but is unlikely to have significant reach before the middle of 2011, will carry Polsat, TVN, TV Puls and TV4, along with one additional channel from each of the four.

The latter will include TV7, which is a satellite channel and for which TVN will have to secure terrestrial rights for its content.

There are also concerns that the money invested by broadcasters in DTT is unlikely to be recouped quickly in a market in which cable and DTH services are already so popular.
