Romtelecom gains TV subs

August 6, 2010 08.53 Europe/London By Chris Dziadul

OTE-backed Romtelecom’s TV operations continued to perform extremely well in the first half of the year despite the deteriorating economic situation in Romania.

Results published by the Greek company showed that the DTH service Dolce and the IPTV platform Dolce Interactiv had a combined subscriber total of 934,082, or 19.8% more than a year earlier. However, Dolce accounted for the vast majority, with Dolce Interactiv having only been launched at the end of 2009 and acquiring more than 12,300 subscribers.

NextGen, the company overseeing Romtelecom’s cable operations, meanwhile gained nearly 27,000 additional RGUs in the second quarter.

Worrying for Romtelecom, its revenues of €178.7 million in Q2 were 11.1% down on the same period in 2009, while EBITDA fell by 59.7% to €24.4 million.

In its home market Greece, OTE ended Q2 with over 30,000 IPTV subscribers, or nearly double the number at the end of 2009.

The OTE group as a whole saw its revenues dip by 8.3% year-on-year in Q2 to €1,358.6 million. It also had a net loss of €60.8 million, compared with a profit of €6.4 million a year earlier.
