More HD for Romania

June 4, 2010 19.04 Europe/London By Chris Dziadul

Romania’s RCS/RDS has begun to offer its cable subscribers HD channels. According to the company, it launched a four-channel package – Digi Sport HD, TVR HD, National Geographic HD and National Geographic Wild HD – on June 1.

Digi Sport HD will give viewers the chance to watch the upcoming World Cup in the format, as well as a host of other sports including several football leagues (among them the Premier League, La Liga and Serie A), NBA, US football, judo, athletics and tennis.

The four HD channels are being offered free of charge to existing clients opting for the cheapest digital package, which consists of at least 86 channels, including the four in HD, and costs RON24 (€5.7) a month, inclusive of VAT. They are, however, required to rent (RON10 a month) or buy (RON350) a HD set-top box.

RCS/RDS is the leading cable operator in Romania and also owns the country’s most popular DTH platform.

HD made its debut last autumn on UPC’s cable networks. They are now also offered by Romtelecom (IPTV) and RCS/RDS (cable) and will be introduced on Romtelecom’s Dolce (DTH) and NextGen (cable) this month.

UPC’s Focus Sat (DTH) is expected to follow this autumn.
