Next month will mark a major turning point for HD in Romania, with services being made much more widely available thanks to launches by both RCS/RDS and Romtelecom.
According to ZF, the latter will start offering HD channels for the first time to subscribers of Dolce, the country’s second largest DTH platform, and the cable TV operator NextGen. In the case of Dolce, they will initially be able to receive four channels – HD TVR, Pro TV HD, Discovery HD and Showcase HD Sport.ro – for €4.90 plus VAT. Up until now, only Romtelecom’s IPTV customers have been offered HD channels.
RCS/RDS has meanwhile confirmed that it, too, will start to offer its subscribers HD channels from next month. However, it has not provided any further details.
The introduction of HD into Romania has until now been driven by UPC, which began offering its cable subscribers channels in the format last autumn. Its DTH platform Focus Sat is expected to follow suit later this year.
