40 applications for Swedish DTT

May 25, 2010 06.34 Europe/London By Julian Clover

Half of the 40 channel applications received by the Swedish Radio and TV Authority (RTVV) by the April 26 deadline were for broadcasting in the HDTV format. The roll call of applicants for the DTT capacity included C More/Canal+, Eurosport, Discovery Channel, Viasat, National Geographic and Disney.

“ It is very positive that we received so many applications and that there is great interest to broadcast terrestrial television,” said RTVV DG Magnus Larsson. “This is of course also the first time that content providers can get permission for the HD channels.”

The RTVV estimates there is enough capacity for two broadcasting networks, most likely transmitting in MPEG–4. It is anticipated that the licences will be issued during June.
