BROADCAST & BEYOND – LONDON. There could be up to 1 million 3D screens in the UK by the end of 2011, according Chris Johns, Chief Engineer, BSkyB. Hopefully, there will also be FTA 3D services up and running in time for the 2012 Olympics in London.
Johns added that over 1,000 pubs have already signed up to Sky 3D and that 2.5 million Sky+ HD set-top boxes are capable of receiving the service.
Johns also said that there would be multiple places in which 3D would be monetised, ranging from 3D TVs, Blu Ray, production of peripherals and equipment supplies in the CE sector to cinemas, pay platforms, pay channels and indeed FTA channels on the exhibition side. Sky 3D, already available in pubs, will make its consumer debut later this year.
