ANGA Cable 2010 – Cologne. Herbert Leifker, the chief operating officer of Unitymedia, says the cablenet is better for the involvement of Liberty Global because the cable giant has demonstrated its commitment to the market.
“Liberty is always interested in long term developments,” Dr Leifker told the famous ‘Elephants Round’ panel at the ANGA Cable event in Cologne. “In the last four or five years we weren’t necessarily slow, but in the last three months we have taken the decision to rollout DOCSIS 3.0 to 80% of our customer base and we will introduce a new DVR in the second half of the month.
Last month, Unitymedia introduced a new price structure for its broadband offer, increasing its slowest speed to 16 Mbps. Customers in Cologne, Bergisch-Gladbach and Aachen can already enjoy DOCSIS 3 powered speeds of 120 Mbps.
Dr Leifker said Liberty did not rule out further expansion in the German market, but any moves would have to be approved by the competition authorities.
