UPC Nederland will add two more HD channels – the Belgian public broadcaster VRT Eén HD and MTVN HD – bringing the total to 16 services in the format.
UPC has also announced the results of a survey among 2,700 subscribers. Just over 60% of those questioned had a Full HD or HD Ready set, with another 14% saying they are planning to buy an HD TV soon.
But, perhaps not surprisingly for some industry observers, only 37% knew that they need an HD subscription and an HD tuner in order to properly watch HD channels. Twenty one per cent had no idea what they need to watch HD television and a further 42% thought they just needed a HD screen or tuner, not all three (TV set, tuner and subscription).
Questioned which programming they would like to see in HD, 46% of the respondents said ‘movies”; 37% wanted to see ‘everything’ in HD; 35% documentaries; 30% sports; and 19% music programming (people could choose any number of categories). The survey was conducted between March 25 and April 2, 2010.
