STV has confirmed it will launch a high definition service in time for the World Cup, however the channel will initially only be available on DTT and cable platforms.
Chairman Richard Findlay told the broadcaster’s annual general meeting that the improved advertising market would enable STV to accelerate its investment in high definition.
STV holds the Channel 3 licence for much of Scotland and draws on its English counterpart ITV for significant elements of its schedule. However, a series of disputes with its English cousin over issues including new media rights and airtime sales have lead to ongoing legal action between the two broadcasters and the dropping of key ITV shows from the STV schedule.
