UPC has upped the ante in its price war with RCS/RDS and Romtelecom in Romania. ZF reports that the company has introduced a package offering analogue cable TV from as little as RON15 (€3.7) a month.
Targeting mostly customers in small towns that have been hardest hit by the recession, it beats the cheapest offered by both RCS/RDS (RON20/month) and Romtelecom’s cable subsidiary NextGen (RON16/month).
UPC is also offering a number of other packages including analogue TV and fixe telephony for RON15 a month for the first year, rising to RON25 a month in the second year. Its digital TV offers are now in the range RON35-51 a month.
UPC’s decision to cut prices is believed to be to some degree influenced by the growing threat of Romtelecom, which is present in the DTH, cable and IPTV sectors.
RCS/RDS, which has traditionally offered the cheapest services, has meanwhile been hit by the fall in the local currency against the dollar and euro and has in fact had to raise its fees on two occasions.
