The Romanian incumbent telco Romtelecom plans to launch a VOD service by the end of this year.
Quoted in Mediafax and ZF, Yorgos Ioannidis, the company’s general director of operations, explained that having introduced an IPTV offer at the end of 2009, it would like to “complete the portfolio with VOD”. Ioannidis also said that Romtelecom plans to introduce three new internet packages next week, one of which will offer access at speeds of up to 100 Mbps.
Commenting on the general market situation, he added that it is likely to stabilise in Romania, with the best strategy for Romtelecom to adopt in 2010 being one of cost optimisation.
Romtelecom is backed by Greece’s OTE and therefore indirectly Deutsche Telekom. It operates Romania’s second most popular DTH platform (Dolce) and an IPTV service (Dolce Interactiv), as well as having interests in cable.
