Cable Congress 2010 – Brussels. Telenet will jump start digitisation in Flanders by doubling its investments in its network.
In a press conference preceding the Cable Congress, Telenet CEO Duco Sickinghe announced the launch of the company’s Digital Wave 2015. “We will modernise our network in 5 years instead of 10,” he said.
The reason for the accelerated investment is the belief in a ‘networked economy’. As a region Flanders can expand, thanks to the existing products with speeds up to 100 Mbps, to become a leader in digital development.
Telenet’s ambition is to help to shape this evolution by substantially modernising its network and offering network applications such as remote medical services; “call centre video assistance” via Internet; 3D television, video on demand, mobile television; new file sharing, synchronization and government online counter service.
“With the ‘Digital Wave 2015’ investment programme, our aim is to raise our own network and services to a higher level, because a robustly expanded fibre glass network can offer a new dimension for future growth. The network improvements, focussing on splitting optical nodes, will take centre position in ‘Digatl Wave 2015’ and will allow Telenet to construct a ‘new generation network”, which is able to meet the changing consumer needs, new Internet applications and future services and technologies,” said Sickinghe.
Telenet does not want to implement “Digital Wave 2015” in isolation, but believes strongly in a partnership model. For that the company is planning to set up the “Flanders Interactive Platform” (F.L.I.P.) an interactive platform, where ideas can be exchanged, technologies tests and new collaborative ventures can be agreed.
Telenet has a history of cooperation with other partners including the successful implementation of interactive digital TV applications with Flemish broadcasters VRT, VMMa and SBS Belgium.
