Sharp increase in ZON triple play

March 2, 2010 09.00 Europe/London By Julian Clover

Leading Portuguese cablenet ZON Multimedia has reported a 17.66 percentage point increase in the number of subscribers taking its triple play services. The operator has also reversed a recent decline in pay-TV subscriptions.

In its financial statements for 2009, ZON said 484,400 subscribers were now taking one of its ZON Triple Play bundles. This represents an average net growth of over 15,000 new triple play customers every month. RGUs grew by 17.6% during 2009 to reach 3,506,500 services.

A revenue increase of 7.5% to €823 million in 2009 delivered net profits of €44 million, slightly down of the €47.9 million of 2008, and reflecting increased investment in subscriber equipment.

Pay-TV subscribers have now stabilised at 1,594,800, the final two quarters of the year reversing a trend that had been seen in the first half of 2009. 18,700 subscribers were lost in the year as customers chose to purchase other services from the operator. There was also a decline in the number of subscriber’s to ZON’s DTH satellite service.

152,200 subscribers now take the top-tier “Funtastic” package, while 454,000 subscribers have offered a home to the new PVR-HD ZON boxes. According to the regulator Anacom, ZON maintains a pay-TV market share of 64.4%.

Some 2.4 million Portuguese households are now covered by EuroDOCSIS 3.0 technology, allowing broadband speeds of between 50 Mbps and 200 Mbps for over 76% of the customer base.
