NDS has thrown its hat into emerging paid-for online news market. It has announced plans for an end-to-end solution for the e-publishing industry.
The solution moves NDS’ undoubted expertise in technology solutions for pay-TV into the monetisation of books, newspapers and magazines on e-reader devices such as Amazon’s Kindle and Sony’s e-reader. Based on its MediaHighway middleware, the technology will be able to provide publishers with measurement and analysis.
“Although the requirements of the digital publishing world are different to our existing pay-TV customers, they share the same essential elements” explained Yossi Tsuria, CTO, NDS. “Security, middleware, and advanced functionality are key factors of success for any digital media business; NDS have the solutions and the expertise to secure that success.”
NDS is part owned by News Corp, a leading proponent of e-readers and the so-called paywalls. In December, News Corp chairman and chief executive Rupert Murdoch warned US regulators that the advertising-only model for internet publishing was dead, saying that newspapers had only prospered through giving their readers what they want.
Separately, NDS has announced the addition of Thinkanalytics to its recommendation engine partner programme.
