NOS launches catch-up TV for PlayStation 3

November 19, 2009 09.58 Europe/London By Robert Briel

NOS_Catch-upTVThe Dutch public broadcaster NOS is making their catch-up TV service for news and sports available on the PlayStation 3 platform. The move follows similar agreements in other countries including the BBC in the UK and Netflix in the US.

Dutch owners of the PS3 console can download a free upgrade to their device which will add a new icon to the Xcross Media Bar (XMB). Under the catch-up TV icon viewers will find the NOS icon, which will give access to the service. The offers consists of the latest NOS Journaal (News), the NOS Jeugdjournaal (for younger viewers) and a variety of news and sports items.

“We follow our audience wherever they go,” said Roeland Stekelenburg, head of New Media at NOS, in a statement. “The NOS Journaal is now available on a variety of mobile phones, internet, IPTV, cable networks, NetTV, a number of set-top boxes and now also on the PS3. We expect a lot from these new platforms and are anxious to learn how they will be received.”

“In addition to the Blu-ray functionality and VidZone, catch-up TV is yet another way to use the PlayStation 3 for more than just gaming”, according to Folkert Langeveld, Brand Manager PlayStatio, Sony Computer Entertainment Benelux.

The catch-up TV upgrade is part of the new Firmware 3.10, which also offers Facebook intergration.
