The Finnish operator DNA has said that as of today (October 8) it is the first service operator in Finland to offer its mobile phone customers television services on the mobile TV network. Initially, DNA will provide its TV services free-of-charge to all viewers on a DVB-H network operated by Digita. The network is also open to other service providers.
“Digita’s MobileTV service complements our range of services superbly. We believe that mobile TV will bring added value to our customers, as the use of the mobile phone is becoming more and more diverse all the time. The picture quality and reliability offered by the mobile TV network match consumer expectations in terms of the quality of TV services so the prospects for launching a commercial service are looking good. When television services are offered through a special customised network, the capacity of the 3G network remains fully available to other high-quality mobile communications,” said consumer business director Pekka Väisänenfrom DNA Oy, in a statement.
”The presence of a strong service operator is a precondition for creating both the market and a successful mobile TV concept in Finland, too. We are very pleased that DNA has decisively set out to offer consumers an expanding package filled with interesting contents. We also expect that the services will include pay-TV services,” said business manager Taina Kaasalainen from Digita.
DNA will start as a service operator in the mobile TV network by offering all viewers a free trial period as of today, October 8. Afterwards, broadcasting will be encrypted and only DNA’s mobile phone customers will be able to subscribe to a basic offer of television and radio channels, including YLE, MTV3 and SBS.
