The Romanian incumbent telco Romtelecom is likely to lose a significant number of internet subscribers to competitors such as RCS/RDS in the next two years, according to a report produced by Pyramid Research.
The findings of the report, published by ZF, suggest that the only way to prevent this from happening is for the telco, which is backed by Greece’s OTE, to start investing in fibre optic infrastructure.
Although Romtelecom is currently the second largest provider of internet services in Romania with nearly 800,000 subscribers, it is already behind RCS/RDS in terms of market share for TV services and broadband internet access.
Indeed, RCS/RDS has fibre-optic infrastructure in place in 43 Romanian cities, giving it the option of offering internet access at up to 50 Mbps.
