Austrian public broadcaster ORF is planning a card swap of the first generation of Cryptoworks smart cards, which have been in use for more than five years.
Through its subsidiary ORS, the pubcaster makes its national TV and radio channels available on satellite to licence fee paying Austrian nationals as free-to-view channels on the Astra satellite at 19 degrees East. Viewers only have to buy a dedicated smart card.
The broadcaster believes between 50,000 and 70,000 cards are affected. Customers have to pay €27.00 for the new cards. The ORF service started as early as 2003.
