Over-the-top provider Boxee has received a $6 million (€4.24 million) cash injection through a funding round that brings in Boston-based General Catalyst. Previous investors Spark Capital and Union Square Ventures also participated in the funding round.
In a statement, Boxee said General Catalyst would also enable it to strengthen its relationship with media and cable companies. It is looking to improve the current Boxee product beyond the new Beta version, scheduled for release in the autumn. The company wants to expand the available content and get its technology downloaded into connected TVs and Blu-ray players.
Boxee can be downloaded onto the PC and Mac, it can also be viewed on the Apple TV device, through a hack that is generally tolerated by Apple. However, its tenuous relationship with content providers means that Hulu has at times been unavailable to US users, and the at times clunky version of the BBC iPlayer has also occasionally been unavailable.
