A long-running copyright dispute involving Ukraine’s cable industry has erupted again.
Cableman reports that the Ukrainian Musical Alliance has filed lawsuits against a number of companies, some of which belong to Volia, the country’s leading cable operator.
A ruling issued back in 2003 requires cable operators to pay copyright fees for the retransmission of music and videos equivalent to 5% of their annual income.
However, cable operators say they already pay copyright fees to broadcasters, who then pay copyright holders.
Complying with the ruling would be tantamount to paying the fees twice.
