Spain is preparing of raft of regulatory measures aimed at addressing its newly emerging digital TV landscape.
El Pais says that the Ministry of Industry is preparing a number of royal decrees, ministerial orders and technical plans that will allow for, amongst other things, the launch of HD services.
Although there are already 7 million HD sets in Spain, viewership of HD channels is largely confined to Digital+ subscribers. Following ASO in April 2010, however, digital terrestrial TV channels will, in accordance of what is still a draft royal decree, be able to distribute their services in HD.
The government will also promote the format by requiring all sets over 21 inches that incorporate a tuner to be able to receive HD channels.
