The number of digital TV homes in the Netherlands has surpassed 4 million.
During Q4 2008, the total number grew by 5.2%, or 200,100 net additions, bringing the total to 4.014 million at the end of the year.
At the same time, digital TV increased its marketshare to 50.9%, according to research by Telecompaper.
The market researcher expects the digital TV market to grow 4-5% per quarter in 2009, reaching the 5 million subscribers mark in 2010.
Growth will slow from an average of 5.6% per quarter in 2008, due to the increased digital TV penetration, as well as the economic downturn.
Cable operator Ziggo is the largest digital provider provider, after adding 72,000 customers during the fourth quarter to end 2008 with 1.15 million digital TV customers.
The satellite DTH operator Canal Digitaal Satelliet posted quarterly growth of 2.4 % and ended the year with 825,000 customers, while KPN grew by 10.7% to reach 775,000 digital TV homes, of which an estimated 40,000 used IPTV.
UPC added 28,800 net additions during the fourth quarter to reach 649,000.
Tele2 was the fifth-largest digital TV provider with 4.7% of the market, or around 190,000 customers.
